| On 17 September, our trustees Song Lam
Wong and Winkie Chau went to a parent evening in Pigeon
Mountain Primary School to explain about the Enviroschool.
Pigeon Mountain Primary is one of 11 Enviroschools
in the Auckland area. The Enviroschools Programme aims
to integrate environmental education into the whole
of school life and create learning opportunities by
working towards a healthy, peaceful and sustainable
environment. The Enviroschools process involves the
whole school community: Board of Trustees; students;
teachers; caretakers; families/whanau and the wider
community each have roles in actively creating and caring
for their school. The programme is focused on a range
of initiatives. Students are taught the concepts of:
biodiversity, interdependence, responsibility and sustainability.
There is an Enviro group made up of parents, staff
and students. They plan and research what needs to be
done to complete the project. Students are involved
in a variety of activities: planning, planting and caring
for gardens; caring for worm farms and composting; planting
a large hill in native trees; The big clean up day;
recycling; developing an orchard; and encouraging others
to take care of their environment by taking positive
actions.
We all know that children are our future and they need
to be educated in all aspects of life. Understanding
the needs of their environment and their responsibility
to the planet is part of this education.
