On 21st February, CCET went on a trip
to a coastal reserve, Long Bay. The day was led by Dr
John Walsby, a renowned biologist, who with the park
rangers introduced our group to “What a coastal
reserve is…”
Dr John Walsby, took us on an all day
tour of New Zealand beach scenes, visiting sand dunes,
life amongst the mangrove bushes, and visiting little
critters in rock-pools.
He taught us animal and plant survival
stories in harsh conditions, and how they had adapted
to their surroundings. He also gave us a few tips on
“How to survive a shipwreck,” by introducing
us to edible beach plants!
Life in the mangroves was very interesting
and resourceful. Forests created are the most productive
and richest ecosystems in the world, and the muddiest!
Mangroves hide a plenitude of secrets, ranging from
camouflaged mud crabs to tropical scented flowers.
The rock-pool adventure was the highlight
of the day. Dr John Walsby introduced us to rare creatures
living amongst the pools.
The day was very successful, educational
and was enjoyed by all.
